- Course objectives
- The course introduces students to the issue of digitization of books and partially digitization of audio and video recordings. On the one hand, the author of the teaching text relies on his own long-term experience in the field of digitization and, on the other hand, on the most important European recommendations and best practices. Large digitalization projects began to develop in the world in the late 1990s and immediately after 2000. At that time, manuals and practical recommendations were created, which were applied in many digitization projects. The main sources used include experience and findings from the copy of the large national project Digital Library and Digital Archive, which was financed from structural funds and whose author is also the author of this text. Students will get to know the message of the Comité des sages of the Europeana project. Practical standard recommendations are presented in accordance with the rules that were developed in the Minerva project. Attention is paid to individual phases of the digitization project, infrastructure, metadata, key technological operations such as material selection, scanning, data formats, conservation procedures, sterilization, deacidification, freeze-drying, issues of digital repositories Islandora, DSpace, Invenio, Grenstone, as well as financial and legal issues of making digital content available. Emphasis is placed on the process of planning and implementation of the digitization process. Important Czech digitization projects (Manuscriptorium, Kramerius) are also analyzed. In the second part, students are introduced to the issue of long-term preservation of digitization results with an emphasis on the issue of migration of digital contents to new carriers. The exercises are focused on practical testing of the entire digitization process, starting with the assessment of the quality of the documents, through scanning, OCR and error correction, to storage on the carrier. The subject also includes an excursion to an important Digitization workplace.
