Course objectives
The course introduces the most important changes of all language levels of German resulting from structural causes and from communicative needs as well. The overview of the changes also shows that older periods still influence modern language usage. In seminars students work with Early New High German texts. Students learn correct interpretation of the texts and diachronic language features leading to the formation of standard language. Special attention is paid to M. Luther`s contribution to the formation of standard language.

    2. Development of the vowel system - vowels, changes in diphthongs
    3. Changes in consonants, First vowel (Germanic) shift, Verner`s law, Second vowel shift
    4. Old High German morphology, syntax, complex clauses
    5. Middle High German - vocalism, consonantism
    6. Middle High German morphology, syntax, complex clauses
    7. Early High German - changes in the system of sounds
    8. Morphology development in the period of Early High German
    9. Syntax development in the period of Early High German, modality
    10. Development of complex clauses
    11. Formation and development of standard language, M. Luther
    12. German language until the mid-20th century
