Course objectives
The course introduces selected countries of Central and Southern Europe and their main tourist destinations, key attractions and major sights in English. After a short presentation of each country, a brief description of its main tourist attractions, i.e. landscapes and natural beauties, typical regions and the most popular tourist destinations, follows. The focus is on monuments and sites that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to their exceptional universal significance, integrity and authenticity, outstanding architectural or natural value and remarkable quality. Each of these sites is briefly introduced and described. All of them represent important evidence of the historical development of the country, society, its lifestyle and social environment from the earliest times to the present day. These monuments are a demonstration of human creativity and an exceptional testimony of cultural traditions and cultures. Students will be introduced not only to significant examples of traditional human settlements, architectural and historical monuments, land use or human interaction with the environment, but also to unique natural phenomena, areas of outstanding natural beauty and aesthetic value.
