Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the current tendencies in Modern Czech grammar at various levels: phonology, morphology, syntax as well as text linguistics.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge of Czech grammar at the master's level; knowledge of important theoretical works and opinions in contemporary Czech linguistics; work with the Czech national corpus and other electronic material resources.
Syllabus
  • 1. Czech grammar - history, present. Important New Bohemian grammars. Neuralgic points of grammatical interpretations. Research methods. 2. Phonetic, phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic word. 3. Basic phenomena of the sound side of speech in relation to grammatical phenomena. 4. Higher order grammar categories. Word-sort transpositions as a reflection of communication needs. 5. Lower order grammatical categories - nouns. Development tendencies caused by the communication area and the norm. 6. Grammatical categories of lower order - verbal. Development tendencies caused by the communication area and the norm. Reflection of thinking in the use of functional possibilities of the verb. 7. Declension paradigms. Status in contemporary grammars of Czech. Polymorphism and variability. Research methods. 8. Conjugation paradigms. 9. Sentence and statement, problems of sentence typology according to the speaker's attitude. Theorem according to the attitude of the speaker versus KF's statement. 10. Syntactic relations, their realization in written and spoken speech 11. Communication functions of utterance in written and spoken text. 12. Current sentence structure and utterance. 13. Grammar resources in the implementation of the statement with   communication function.
