Course objectives
1. Introduction (Introduction to the topic, study literature) 2. Internet and access to historical sources (use of electronic resources in research on specific examples; current state of digitization of sources) 3-4. Censorship and propaganda in the media century (Changes in censorship, propaganda and media manipulation in the 20th century; sources: political song; cartoon, anecdote) 5.-6. Visual media (sources: political and advertising poster in the 20th century; photography, match stickers as a medium of enlightenment and promotion; filumenia; coins and paper money as a medium; tuzex vouchers) 7. Film as a mass medium (Development of spectator culture and cinema in the 20th century, the effects of sound film, amateur film; sources on the history of film: posters, specialized magazines, collectibles and popularization of stars) 8. Radio and television as a form of modern communication (Development of program composition, listening and spectator culture, sources: specialized press, typology of radio and television equipment) 9.-10. Information revolution: postal traffic and sources of the 19th and 20th centuries (Modernization of postal traffic, letters as a source: postage stamps in our territory until 1945; postage stamps; development of postage stamps, postcards and postal stationery) 11. Sound recording (Gramophone industry in the 20th century, the origin of the tape recorder and the social impact of miniaturization) 12.-13. Transport and communications (Development of the road and railway network in the 20th century, shipping, sources on the history of transport: travel documents and their classification, state license plates, timetables, iconography)
Learning outcomes
The lecture will introduce selected types of modern media and sources with media communication against the background of the development of media and forms of communication in the 20th century. Emphasis will be placed on the use of a wide range of sources for historical research, especially in the field of cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries, while attention will be focused on sources of domestic origin, with which it is most often possible to come into contact in historical research. Students will be acquainted with the historicity of these sources, social, economic and cultural contexts associated with their origin. During the course, students will also get acquainted with illustrative examples.
