Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the theoretical and practical aspects of the digitization process. The course describes and practically demonstrates procedures in the creation and long-term preservation of digital collections, digitization technologies, standards, procedures for securing digital collections and the creation or retrieval of metadata of digital copies of documents.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify and summarize important features of the main digitization methods;
- identify and describe current trends;
- practically process a digitized document.
Syllabus
  • Terminology
  • Digitization - definition and basic terminology, OCR technology, digitization as a process, data formats and their use in document digitization, metadata description.
  • Suitable image formats - traditional documents versus electronic documents, reasons for digitization, technical aspects of digital documents: resolution, color depth, compression, document storage technology
  • Standards, use and interpretation of metadata, basic formats of museum, archival and bibliographic description.
  • Quality control and evaluation - mechanisms ensuring the availability and readability of products
  • Creation of projects for digitization of cultural heritage, national and transnational strategies for digitization of cultural content, legislation regulating the processes of digitization and use of digitized documents, economics of digitization projects.
  • Digital libraries and their operation, software and hardware tools enabling the digitization process, examples of good practice in the Czech Republic and in the world.
