Course objectives
Main aim is to form student's critical thinking by giving practical tasks, introduce basic theatre-critics genres and develope student's analytic, discussion and polemic abilities.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should have better understanding of contemporary Czech theatre and film criticism. Students will get to know different forms of criticism in profesisonal journals, daily press and on the internet. Moreover, they will get to know specifics, problems and major figures of contemporary criticism. Students will also create their own critics.

  • 1. Situation of contemporary culture critique. Relationship between culture nad critique.
  • 2. Functions and roles of theatre critique. Who is a cultural journalist?
  • 3. Mass media – theatre and broadcast: printed media, internet, radio and TV.
  • 4. Personalities of contemporary Czech theatre and broadcast critique.
  • 5. Analysis and interpretation of text.
  • 6. Mass media – film and TV journalism: printed media, internet, radio and TV.
  • 7. Personalities of contemporary Czech film and TV critique.
  • 8. Analysis and interpretation of text.
  • 9. Journalistic genres and formats: critical reflexions, newspaper critique, critical portrait, conversation.
  • 10. The cultural journalism: review, critique.
  • 11. The cultural journalism: conversation as part of critical reflection.

Teaching methods
Class discussion, individual reading, submitting tasks. The emphasis is on active work (critical analysis).
Assessment methods
1. Participation in seminars.
2. Active participation in class discussions and analysis, based on the knowledge of prescribed literature.
3. Well-timed implementation of partial tasks.
4. Completion of the course paper - review. Unsatisfactory papers will be returned for revision.
5. Credits are awarded based on the submission of the course paper with respect to the student´s participation in course discussions during the semester.
