Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with comprehensive issues of preventive conservation of museum exhibits. Students will bring home the basic concepts in the field of conservation and restoration, ethical standards, system preservation and restoration of museum collections in the Czech Republic, specialized departments and legislation. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the specifics of remedial and preventive conservation, principles of occupational health with collections, monitoring microclimate conditions in the interiors and their regulation, general principles of inorganic and organic materials presented in museums, galleries and archives collections, rescue organization during natural disasters, the principles of care the presentation of the collections, depositing and transport, protection of collections using substitutes, particularly digitization and finally evaluating the effectiveness of the activities carried out. It will be accentuated for all themes by the principles of preventive conservation during daily handling of the collections. Students will check their knowledge in practice in the Centre of restoration and conservation UHV. The main task of the seminar will be writing a seminar paper - namely, developing a concept complex intervention on a given subject in a simple metal. Each student will have to carry out research, proposal intervention, treatment, storage and documentation. Listeners must continuously during the semester also process subtasks that they will be entered in the laboratory exercises. Above the results of seminar papers will be shared discussion moderated by the teacher.

  • 1. 1. Role of preventive conservation in protecting collections in modern museums. Ethical standards.
    2. 2. The current legislation. Basic literature. History of the field. Professional associations and important work in the country. Health at work with collections
    3. 3. Effects of temperature and humidity/moisture on the collections
    4. 4. The effects of optical radiation on materials collection
    5. 5. Effects of solid, liquid and gaseous contaminants at the materials collection
    6. 6. Causes and consequences of biological attack collections. The impact of humans.
    7. 7. Protection of collections during the presentation, storing and transport
    8. 8. Specifics of preventive protection of articles according to their material nature
    9. 9. Specifics of preventive protection of articles according to their material nature
    10. Protection of collections in crisis
    11. 10. The use of substitutes as the possibility of preservation of the collections. The specifics use of standard and digital copies of the originals.
