Course objectives
The course focuses on systematic development of the students` abilities to create various text types in English. The course loosely follows up Writing Skills, in which the basic writing skills are the focus. In Academic Writing 1, the main aim is for the students to operate with a larger amount of information and use it creatively and correctly in writing.
Syllabus
  • 1. Thesis statement, outline and paragraph structure
    2. Collecting, plannning, developing ideas for the body
    3. Transitional words and phrases
    4. Writing and rewriting the draft
    5. Language awareness (spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary)
    6. Coherence and cohesion, consistency
    7. Documentation and interpretation of data, organization of secondary material
    8. Editing, revising and proofreading
    9. Drawing conclusions, writing a summary (an abstract)
    10. Writing letters
    11. Explanation, illustration, description
    12. Comparison and contrast
