- Course objectives
- The course offers an overview of German literature from the Middle Ages to the Baroque Epoch as well as the Enlightenment period known as the so-called Weimar Classicism, represented by Goethe and Schiller. Other important literary works from authors of the 18th century German literature, e.g. Lessing, Lenz etc., will also be examined. The seminars will be based on the topics covered in the lectures. Students will analyze parts of the discussed literary works and passages of these works. Students will discuss any problems. Also in this course, students will discuss the various books from the course syllabus.

1. German literature of the baroque period. Introduction to the period and selected authors.
2. Paul Fleming and Andreas Gryphius. Life and work of the poet.
3. German literature of the Enlightenment period. Introduction to the period and selected authors.
4. Gotthold E. Lessing. Life and work of the poet.
5. Sturm und Drang. Introduction in to the period and selected authors.
6. Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Life and work of the poet.
7. Friedrich Schiller. Life and work of the poet.
8. Heinrich von Kleist and Friedrich Hölderlin. Life and work of the poet.
Seminar:
1. Lessing: Emilia Galotti/ Nathan der Weise.
2. Goethe: Götz von Berlichingen/ Schiller: Kabale und Liebe.
3. Bürger: Lenore / Lenz: Der Hofmeister.
4. Goethe: Iphigenie auf Tauris/ Schiller: Maria Stuart.
