Course objectives
The cycle of lectures and seminars is dedicated to an overview of the 19th century Italian literature. The lectures aim to characterize the period from a literary, historical and social point of view and to present its main authors. The seminars consist in analyses of a series of literary works.

  • 1. Il primo Ottocento: contesto storico e culturale. La questione della lingua e Alessandro Manzoni.

    2. I classici del romanticismo italiano. Alessandro Manzoni.
    Analisi: Manzoni: estratti da I promessi sposi e Fermo e Lucia
    3.-4. I classici del romanticismo italiano. Giacomo Leopardi.
    Analisi: Leopardi: L`Infinito, A Silvia
    5.-6. La prosa nel periodo del Risorgimento. L`opera di Ippolito Nievo.
    Analisi: Nievo: estratti da Le confessioni di un italiano
    7.-8 La poesia nel periodo del Risorgimento. La lirica patriottica e la poesia dialettale.

    9.-10. Il secondo Ottocento: contesto storico e culturale. La scapigliatura e il romanzo verista di Verga.

    11. Le correnti del decadentismo italiano. Gabriele D`Annunzio.
