- Course objectives
- Description of electroweak processes, which are important both in elementary particle physics and astrophysics.
- Syllabus
- The weak interaction before the gauge theories. Universal V-A theory and its problems. Intermediate vector bosons. Abelian and non-Abelian gauge invariance. Electroweak unification and gauge symmetry. SU(2)xU(1) gauge theory for leptons. Higgs mechanism. Interactions of the Higgs boson. Charged current weak and electromagnetic interactions of leptons. Elementary weak processes with leptons. Weak neutral currents, low energy neutrino-electron scattering. Weinberg angle, masses of the W and Z bosons. Interactions of the W and Z bosons, their leptonic decay widths. Electroweak interactions of quarks. Universality of weak interactions. GIM (Glashow,Iliopoulos, Maiani) mechanism, a prediction of the c quark. CP parity violation and the Kobayashi and Maskawa argument in the favor of three families of quarks. Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and its parametrizations.
Jarlskog's invariant. Quark mechanisms of the weak leptonic, semileptonic, and nonleptonic decays of hadrons. Explanation of the phenomenological selection rules for the weak decays of hadrons.
