- Course objectives
- The subject focuses on the study of ceramics as the most frequent component of material culture (history of research, methodology, research methods, chronology, literature) and its development from the post-Great Moravian and Late Hillfort period until the modern age (production technology, typology, morphology). Attention is paid to the context of finds (description, ceramic categories and groups, distribution, regional groups and circles), to the classification of ceramic products on the basis of shape and function (kitchenware, tableware, storage, stove, technical, art and hygiene ceramics) and to the cultural, social and economic aspects of pottery production.
- Syllabus
- 1. Study of ceramics in the Czech lands and in Europe, methodological approaches, research methods, chronology, ceramics as an indicator of the function of a site; cultural, social and economic context.
2. Production technology of medieval and modern-age ceramics, raw materials, archaeometry.
3. Description systems of medieval ceramics, ceramic classes and shape groups, decoration, relative and absolute dating, regional groups and circles.
4. Post-Great Moravian and Late Hillfort period ceramics, typology, graphite ceramics, potters' marks, distribution (whorls, melting pots, grain roasters, building daub, floor iles).
5. Medieval ceramics, morphology of shapes and vessel rims, red-painted ceramics. Loštice pottery, Brno goblets.
6. Early modern-age, modern-age and folk ceramics, typology, description, dating, Anabaptist production, Beroun ware.
7. Typology, morphology and terminology of kitchenware, tableware and storage ceramics.
8. Building ceramics, brick-making, bricks and shaped bricks, floor tiles, roofing (flap pantile roofing), pipes.
9. Stove ceramics, production technology of tiles, typology and morphology, decoration.
10. Technical ceramics (melting ceramics: melting pots, burners; alchemy ceramics: distillation apparatuses; water pipes).
11. Art ceramics, typology, function (anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, toys, pipes).
12. Hygiene ceramics (aquamaniles, jugs and bathing tubs, lavabos, dying bowls, chamber pots).
