Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the present situation of Czech Anglophone studies and give them an opportunity to learn about, understand and use professional literature and basic linguistic terminology so that they are well informed about their study program and practical issues of their studies.

  • 1. Language and communication, Definition of language, Language typology
    2. English as a world language, Germanic languages, Accents and standards
    3. Linguistics - scientific study of language, Structuralism, The scope of linguistics
    4. Grammar, morphology, syntax
    5. Phonetics and phonology
    6. Word stock, lexicology and lexicography
    7. The linguistic sign - semantics and semiotics
    8. Obtaining linguistic data - corpus linguistics, Corpus annotation, Types of corpora
    9. Language and mind - psycholinguistics, Idiolect, Speech disorders
    10. Language and society - sociolinguistics, Sociolect, Dialect
    11. Language and logic - pragmalinguistics, Cooperative Principle, Politeness Principle
    12. Text linguistics and functional stylistics
