Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with fundamentals of pedology (soil science), hydrology, soil and water protection and soil and water monitoring.
Syllabus
  • * Subject and tasks of soil science. Definition of soil. Soil as a part of ecosystems and as a component of the environment. European Soil Charter.
    * Pedogenesis, pedogenic processes and soil-forming factors.
    * Physical properties of soils, chemical properties of soils, sorption properties of soils.
    * Composition of soils, mineral phases in soils, organic substances in soils, water in soils.
    * Soil texture and soil structure.
    * Diagnostic soil horizons and their dominant soil-forming processes.
    * Soil classification.
    * Human impact on soil quality, anthropogenic causes of soil degradation. Soil contamination, pollutants pathways into soil, long-distance transport of pollutants.
    * Soil monitoring - soil sample collection and sample analysis methods. Sampling and analysis of soil water and soil air. Indicators for assessment and monitoring. Hazardous elements and hazardous substances in agricultural soils.
    * Monitoring of soil contamination in the Czech Republic. Agrochemical testing of agricultural soils. Contaminated land register. Basal monitoring of agricultural soil - methodology, monitoring plots.
    * Hydrosphere and human activity. Physical and chemical properties of water. Main hydrological and water management terms. European Water Charter. The EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC.
    * Water classifications.
    * Human impact on aquatic ecosystems - direct and indirect effects.
    * Eutrophication and acidification of water - their causes and consequences. Natural and managed self-cleaning processes in water.
    * Contamination of surface water and groundwater. Hazardous substances in water. Accidental water pollution. Source water protection.
    * Biological methods of waste water treatment. Anaerobic, anoxic, oxic processes. Treatment of sewage sludge. Sewage system.
    * Administration of watercourses, river basin management plans.
    * Water quality monitoring: water sampling, storage and preservation methods. Hydrometry. Fundamental principles of analytical methods.
    * Indicators and values of permissible pollution of water. Emission and imission standards and limits. EQS (Environmental Quality Standard). BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), TOD (Total Oxygen Demand), ThOD (Theoretical Oxygen Demand) and relations between them. TOC (Total Organic Carbon).
    * Water monitoring according to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. Current situation of water monitoring in the Czech Republic.
