- Course objectives
- To acquaint students with the rules and principles of English grammar in the course, students will learn how language is structured and what the term grammar includes, as well as how the prescriptive and descriptive approach to grammar differs. Students will learn to distinguish between different word types and phrases, sentence members and sentence types.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- navigate the field of grammar;
- identify and describe how the language works and what are the approaches to grammar;
- distinguish individual word types and phrases, sentence members and sentence types; - Syllabus
- 1. What is grammar? Standard and non-standard English. Prescriptive vs descriptive grammar. 2. Structure of language. Morphology vs syntax. Types of words. 3. Families of words. Structures of words. 4. Content words: nouns, lexical verbs, adjectives, adverbs. 5. Function words: determiners, pronouns, auxiliary verbs. 6. Function words: prepositions, conjunctions. 7. Function words: particles, interjections. 8. Special classes of words. Word class ambiguities. 9. Phrases: defining a phrase, identifying a phrase. 10. Phrases: types of phrases. Clause patterns. 11. Clause elements: subject, verb, object. 12. Clause elements: complement, adverbial. 13. Clause vs sentence. Types of clauses.
