Course objectives
The aim is to give basic information about studying astrophysics in Opava and provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant scientific knowledge for this study, which will be made deeper in the various specialized lectures and seminars.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the study of astrophysics and possibilities of creative involvement of students, organization of seminars, brief history of astronomy and the birth of astrophysics, physical constants and units used in astrophysics.
    2. The basic building blocks of matter and 4 fundamental forces.
    3. Electromagnetic radiation: thermal radiation, braking, cyclotron and synchrotron radiation, polarization, radiation of atoms and molecules - spectral lines, continuum, MASER; cosmic rays, neutrinos; gravity waves.
    4. Basic characteristics of the stars, star size, color index, spectral class, H-R diagram, mass - luminosity relation, color diagram.
    5. Spherical astronomy, time, astronomy coordinates, equatorial coordinates of 1st and 2nd type; sideral time, time zones.
    6. Star maps and catalogs, planisphere, astronomy almanach.
    7. Important constellations, visibility of constellations according to the seasons, circumpolar constellation, constellation of the zodiac, summer triangle, orientation in the sky.
    8. Constellations of autumn and winter skies.
    9. Bodies of the Solar System. Kepler laws of motion of planets, orbit elements, Kepler equation; opposition, conjunctions, elongation; retrograde motion of outer planets; comets.
    10. Astronomical instruments, refractors and reflectors, optical defects, mounting, CCD cameras, spectroscopy.
    11. Calendars.
