Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to selected questions, concepts, methods and literary schools in contemporary literary theory.
Learning outcomes
After graduation, the student will be able to: - describe the basic concepts and questions of contemporary literary theory - characterize individual literary schools and directions - apply knowledge of the theory of interpretation and philosophy of literature to fiction texts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Contexts of the birth of modern literature and literary theory. 2. What is literature, what is theory (many approaches). 3. Literature and communication - possibilities and limits. 4. Aesthetics of production - from the author's intention to the death of the author. 5. Aesthetics of the work - structure, fictional worlds, the event of meaning. 6. Aesthetics of reception - from the implicit reader to the pleasure of the text. 7. Literary history as a problem of the theory of literature. 8. The value of a literary work as a theoretical question. 9. Literary genre as a question of literary theory. 10. Rhetoric and stylistics in literary theory. 11. Literary hermeneutics - necessity and impossibility of the method. 12. What happens when we interpret? 13. Repetition of concepts.
