- Course objectives
- In the lecture course, students will learn about the circumstances of the creation, construction and demise of various types of medieval and modern manor houses and fortifications based on the testimony of archaeological and historical sources. The construction form of fortified buildings, location in the landscape, strategic importance, layout, functions and communication links with the surroundings will be specified in the interpretation. Other thematic areas will focus on questions related to the administrative, economic and military aspects of feudal settlements, including the social composition and mentality of the owners, court culture, chivalry and manifestations of the lifestyle of the aristocratic classes. Individual phenomena, processes and trends will be presented in the lecture and developed in the seminar.

- Acquiring knowledge about the development, form and meaning of manor houses. Knowledge of relevant material sources. Application in historical and archaeological practice.

- 1. Manor houses and fortifications – methodology, terminology, origin, function, basic development. Sources and literature. 2. The beginnings of fortified settlements - castle organization. 3. The beginnings of aristocratic nobility and the colonization of the landscape. The mentality of power elites, nobility, court culture. 4. Medieval castles, layout and building types. Castle architecture. 5. Fortresses, castles and motte-type objects - creation, building form and typology. 6. Culture of living and interior fittings of castles, castles and fortresses. 7. Residential courts of the nobility. Locks – terminology, basic development and typology. 8. Living culture and interior fittings of castles and residences. 9. Military fortresses – border and land. 10. Military, conquest and siege technology. 11. Material culture, militaria, equestrian equipment. 12. Everyday life and lifestyle of the nobility (dressing, eating, spending free time, festivities) 13. Manor houses in Czech Silesia.
