Course objectives
Course introduces students to gravitational waves, their theoretical description and detectors.
Learning outcomes
Understanding of generation and detection of gravitational waves
Syllabus
  • Course is organised as follows
  • Linear theory, wave equation, planar wave, TT gauge
  • Interaction of gravitational wave with particle, interferometers
  • Equation of geodesic deviation, energy momentum tensor of gravitational wave
  • Propagation of gravitational wave in curved spacetimes
  • Generation of gravitational waves. Quadrupole formula. Luminosity
  • Gravitational wave as a perturbation of black hole spacetimes. Perturbation of Schwarzschild spacetime, axial and polar perturbation
  • Regge-Wheeler equation and Zerilli equation. Quasinormal modes
  • Binary systems. Hulse-Taylor pulsar
  • Oscillations of neutron stars and generation of gravitational waves
  • LIGO and LISA interferometers. Other detectors of gravitational waves (PTA etc.)
  • Detected sources of gravitational waves and their impact on our understanding of astrophysics
  • Gravitational waves and cosmology
