- Course objectives
- The student will acquire basic knowledge in the area of the effect of anthropogenic factors on individual components of the environment, ecosystems and human health and in the area of protection of the environment, ecosystems and human population from the effects of these factors.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to: identify and summarize the basic problems of environmental protection.
- Syllabus
- 1. Environmental protection. The relationship between ecology and environmental protection. Characteristics of different approaches to environmental classification. System diagram of human environment. Biotic and abiotic components of the environment. 2. Ecology. The science of relationships and bonds. The principle of positive and negative feedback. A holistic approach to ecosystem research. 3. Biotic components of the environment. Individual, population, community. Characteristics and forms of population growth. Relations between populations. Characteristics of the community and the process of succession. 4. Ecosystem. Spatial and functional definition of the ecosystem, types of ecosystems. Processes in ecosystems - energy-material flows and biogeochemical cycles. Energy flow in the ecosystem, food trophic chains in the ecosystem. Primary and secondary production of the ecosystem. Biogeochemical cycles in ecosystems. Diagram of an idealized closed ecosystem with perfect recycling. 5. Ecological stability and balance. Definition and interrelationship between ecological stability and ecological balance. Ecological balance as a dynamic state of the ecosystem. Limiting and production factors influencing the ecological balance. The Law of Tolerance and Minimums. 6. Environmental burdens. Air, water, soil pollution. Waste pollution. Pollution by physical effects. Hygiene and well-being of the environment. 7. Global pollution. Acidic atmospheric deposition. Climate change. Ozone layer. Smog. Contamination of the biosphere. Change in biological diversity. Ecological crisis.
