- Course objectives
- The course is aimed at acquainting the students with specific clinical conditions and diseases in the fields of surgery. The course describes symptoms and therapy for specific surgical conditions and presents comprehensive nursing care for specific surgical diseases. Having finished the course, the students will have good grasp of the issues of surgical nursing; they will be able to provide nursing care for specific clinical conditions.
- Syllabus
- 1. Thoracic surgery: injuries and clinical conditions, special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, specific surgical interventions: exploratory thoracotomy, lung resection, decortications of fibrous membranes, thoracoplasty, risks and complications during and after operation.
2. Vascular surgery: clinical conditions, special pre-operative care, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions: endarterectomy, bypass, angioplasty, aneurysms, varicose veins, amputation of ischemic limb, risks and complications during and after operation.
3. Breast surgery: clinical conditions, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
4. Thyroid gland surgery: clinical conditions, special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
5. Adrenal gland surgery: clinical conditions, special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
6. Locomotor system traumatology: clinical conditions, special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
7. Polytraumas: characteristics, principles of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Significance and method of monitoring of vital functions.
8. Orthopaedics: injuries of ligaments, bones and joints, dislocations, total joint replacement, traumatic amputations; special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operations.
9. Urology: clinical conditions and traumas, special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, urological interventions: at kidneys, urinary tract; risks and complications during and after operation.
10. Cardiac surgery: clinical conditions, special pre-operative preparation, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, cardiac surgery interventions: coronary arterial bypass, interventions on valves; risks and complications during and after operation.
11. Burns: causes, organ pathophysiology, types of burns; assessment of burn extent and depth; non-surgical and surgical treatment, care.

Information on the extent and intensity of the course: Přednáška 9 HOD/SEM, Seminář 18 HOD/SEM. - Teacher's information
- 80% active attendance at seminars (the teacher can specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons) and submission of seminar essay.
Credit requirements: Written test with cut-off score: 80 %. Draft of nursing plan for a patient with a selected surgical disease.
Requirements on exam: oral exam.
