Course objectives
The situation of central Europe in relation to political and cultural trends of Euro-American civilisation, understanding of dynamics and mutual interrelation of individual temporal closed eras and historical millstones (impact of world wars on culture or cultural models, specific of totalitarian regimes in central Europe and their impact on culture).

  • 1. What is the 20th century? - delimitation of periodization and their specific of prism of culture
    2. Periodization of the 20th century
    3. Cultural centres and cultural periphery - changes and replaces
    4. Cultural models and morality: cathedral, sport stadium, cinema, hypermarket
    5. East vs. West, specifics of Slavic and German feature in central European cultural, mental and intellectual situation
    6. Austria as multinational monarchy (impact of Franz Josephian era at the beginnings of the 20th century)
    7. Influences of cultural centres on central European situation in examples of Berlin and Vienna
    8. Specifics of cultural development of interwar periods: Germany, Russia, USA as models of cultural and civilization perspective of central European countries
    9. Emancipation of Slavic nations and modernity; regions and formation of local cultural traditions
    10. Specifics of central European intellectualism in the 20th century
    11. Specifics of art culture of the 20th century in central Europe
    12. Specifics of pop culture of the 20th century in central Europe
