Course objectives
The course Consultancy in PA is conceived to give basic orientation of students in the system of consultancy. The aim of the course is to transfer theoretical findings of current possibilities of consultancy regarding both organizational aspect and aspect of possible approaches to client. It presents the fundamental principles of theoretical approaches to students in individual case work (e.g. psychoanalysis, systemic approach), as well as in family therapy (V. Satir) and work with a group. It approximates the fundamental aspects of work with clients in helping profession through the first contact with the client, anamnesis, diagnostics, intervention till termination of consultancy work, the attention is paid to issue of crisis intervention as well. It presents also various institutions which offer consultancy. The instruction is based on connecting theoretical knowledge with practical skills and interactive experiential direct experience. It is based on the active experience of the students, which they acquired during their professional internships. The acquired knowledge is connected with other course subjects. Study Outcomes: Professional Knowledge: Students can define basic concepts of the theory of consulting and they are familiar with the principles of mental health care. They are well informed on basic counselling intervention approaches. Professional Skills: Students can communicate correctly with the client, respecting the current context for the communication. They master the technique of active listening and asking questions to enable themselves to respect the requirements and the current issues of the client, focusing on their solutions. General Qualification: They are able to pass the required information to the client in an appropriate, adequately intelligible manner.

  • 1. Introduction to subject. Characteristics of consultancy. Forms, areas and aims of consultancy work
    2. Types and characteristics of consultancy institutions. Special consultancy
    3. Phases of consultancy-therapeutic process. Formulation of target. External conditions. Work with time.
    4. Personality of consultant, ethic rules. Burnout syndrome
    5. Clients measures, social norms and specialization of consultant. Recognition of help and control. Means of termination social work
    6. Methods of consultancy work - individual, family and group therapy. Risky clients.
    7. Anamnesis dialogue. Leading dialogue with client. Useful questions. Measuring and constructive questions. Evaluation of client.
    8. Family therapy. Circular questioning. Different approaches to work with family.
    9. Group therapy. Characteristics of therapeutic group. Group dynamics
    10. Consultancy approaches - development of thinking from linear concept to system concept. Freud. Jung, Adler

    Seminar
    The topics of lectures are followed by experiential exercises in the seminar where basic skills needed for the contact with clients are developed. Through the exercises, students will develop practical skills especially in conducting a dialogue, the ability to reflect on both their own and the client's non-verbal communication, and on empathic understanding. We will use the knowledge from the lectures about the appropriate use of questions. The feedback of the students' success is also provided using a camcorder.

Teacher's information
In the seminar, students will be assigned continuous assessment tasks, e.g. drawing up family maps, preparing for an interview with a client, an introduction on a consulting point workplace in the region.
Active participation in the seminars.
Students will be able to continuously consult the individual topics studied via e-mail, or in consultation upon request
The instructor will notify the students on the topics that have not been fully lectured for them to seek in the compulsory literature or at the e-learning site.
