The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to introduce the historical development of political system in Czech lands from 1918 till present day. The content is conceived with regard to related subjects (History of Czechoslovakia, Political Systems of Central and Eastern Europe, Legal Systems of Central European Countries etc.) and is divided in two chronological-thematic blocks. In the first one, there are four parts which basically correspond to principal changes of political regime and portray main trends of development of constitutional, partial and electoral system of Czechoslovakia in 1918-1989. The second block, in detail, introduces the transition to democracy after 1989, decline of Czechoslovak federation and the course of transformation of constitutional and political system in the Czech republic including final comparison with other central European countries. The tutorial will be dedicated to selected issues of forming conflict lines in Czech politics, political culture, representation of interests, communal politics as well as role of administration in political process. The students acquire synoptical facts about fundamental institutions of political system in the Czech republic as well as about principles of their activity, they are able to orient in current political process and view it in wider historical connections.

  • 1. Introduction to study of political system of the Czech republic ( terminology, periodization, literature)
    2. Democratic political system of the first Czechoslovak republic (1918-1938)
    3. Political system in the period of the Second Republic, Nazi totalitarian system in protectorate, so called Czechoslovak government-in-exile
    4. Pre-totalitarian system so called people´s republic and totalitarian communist system - Stalinism and beginnings of destalinization (1945-1956)
    5. Changes of post-totalitarian regime of communist Czechoslovakia: destalinization, reform, normalisation (1956-1989)
    6. Transition to democracy and decline of Czechoslovak federation, basic principles of political system of the Czech republic
    7. Constitutional institutions in the Czech republic (parliament, president, government, judicial system in the Czech republic, Czech National Bank)
    8. Partial system and political parties in the Czech republic
    9. Electoral system and elections in 1990-2004
    10. Organized interests and other aspects of political system
    11. State administration and territorial self-government in political process
    12. Transformation of political system of the Czech republic in central-European context
