Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge and procedures of education of patients which is integral part of nursing. Education and awareness of patients improves quality of nursing care and the right of patients to information in legally based. The course shortly explains social need of education of adults, describes motivation factors of learning, hierarchy of learning, explains significance of education of patients for nursing care, describes professional model of education of patients in connection with their state of health. The course lists prerequisites and skills of nurses for educative activity, characterizes principles of education of patients. The student improves the acquired skills of educating and preparing educational plans in the course of further study and clinical practice. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to define terms of pedagogy, andragogy, education. The student is able to describe motivation factors for learning, is able to explain the significance of education of patients in nursing and characterize the right of patient to information in accordance with the law. The student is able to explain the relations of education and patient's state of health, is able to characterize principles of education of patients, is able to explain the effect of education on the process of change of patient's behaviour. Professional skills: The student is able to assess the need of education of patient. The student is able to describe and explain the structure of an educational plan. The student is able to create an educational plan on a selected topic. General ability: The student is capable of making independent decisions and select correct methodical approach to creating educational plan and to providing information to a patient or a group of patients. Competence: The student is capable to educate and inform individuals, families and groups about current state of health, measures adopted for its improvement and prevention of risk of complications, professionally and methodically.
Syllabus
  • 1. Education of adults - basic terms (pedagogy and andragogy), adults in andragogy, motivation for learning, aim groups of education.
    2. Didactic theory of education of adults (motivation factors, ability to learn, didactic cube - learning process, learning methods, learning base, hierarchy of adult learning).
    3. Education in nursing (short history, the right of patient to information, current demands on education of patients, professional model of education, education and patient's state of health).
    4. Prerequisites for effective education of patients (skills of a nurse in the role of an educator, principles of education of patients, education and process of change, education documentation).
    5. Methodology of creating educational plan (examples of topic of educational plans, assessment of educative needs of patients, structure of educational plan).

Teacher's information
Credit requirements:
Active attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars (Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks to meet course requirements.)
Controlled self-study.
Presentation of prepared educational plan (for a selected topic) in a seminar.
Final written electronic test, a minimum of 75 per cent of correct answers are required.
