- Course objectives
- The course aims to improve knowledge of grammar rules, to refine communication skills in the English language (both written and oral), to introduce students to extended quota of medical terminology and the system of its forming and using. The course includes practice of all basic language skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translation) with focus on understanding specialized text and on ability to communicate in situations specific for medical professions (speaking to patients, understanding documentation and specialized articles). After finishing the course, the student will be well informed about frequented medical terms (including anatomic nomenclature and its Latin roots), about key grammatical-communicative means and selected facts about health care systems in the English-speaking countries. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student demonstrates knowledge of about 1000 specialized terms in the medical field and is able to use them in receptive mode (reading with comprehension, listening) and in productive mode (writing specialized text, monologue and dialogue). The student knows available printed and on-line dictionaries and English sources in their field of study. Professional skills: The student is capable of extended general and specialized communication in English, both in spoken and written discourse. The student is able to use available dictionaries and on-line sources, is able to describe patient's condition, is able to understand basic documentation including abbreviations, is able to understand specialized text of their field of study and translate it adequately. General ability: The student acquires and produces verbally coded information in various professional and non-professional communication situations. Competence: The student communicates in English effectively, understands specialized text on intermediate level of difficulty, expresses ideas in English sensibly in spoken and written discourse and on both general and specialized medical topics.

2. Basics of medical terminology 7 - nursing care aids, medical instruments, medical technology, patient care. / Communication with patient and doctor in the course of nursing care.
3. Medical and nursing diagnostics. ICD, NANDA. / Medical abbreviations. Abbreviations in medical documentation.
4. Basics of medical terminology 8 - pharmacology and therapy. Microbiology / Writing letters, e-mails.
5. Basics of medical terminology 9 - surgery and orthopaedics. / Record into nursing forms.
6. Basics of medical terminology 10 - circulatory system. / Using a dictionary.
7. Basics of medical terminology 11 - digestive system. / Specialized reading. Structure of specialized articles.
8. Basics of medical terminology 12 - respiratory system. Integumentary system. Urinary and reproductive systems. / Discussion about public health.
9. Basics of medical terminology 13 - nervous system. / Discussion about health care systems.
10. Summary of knowledge. Final assessment. / Thinking about future profession.

- Attendance in a minimum of 90 per cent of seminars and preparation of following outputs are required for completion: Glossary of terms- continuous record of vocabulary, checked by tutor.
Seminar presentation -assigned specialized topic, in the form of PPT presentation or frontal/ interactive oral presentation
Credit test, a minimum of 70 per cent of correct answers are required. Oral exam.
