Course objectives
The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of grammar rules, develop communication skills in written and spoken English, get the students familiar with the position of English in everyday and professional communication as well as with a set of health-related terminology and the system of is formation and usage. The course comprises practice in all areas of linguistic skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translation) with an emphasis on comprehension of professionally oriented texts and the ability to communicate in situations specific for the health professions (talking to the patient, understanding health records and medical/nursing journals and so on). On completion of the course, the student be orientated in commonly used health care terms (including anatomic nomenclature and its Latin roots), basic grammatical rules and means of communication, as well as selected ´life and institutions´ issues of English speaking countries.

  • 1. Basic health care terminology 6 - nursing aids, medical/surgical instruments, health care devices, patient care - part I.
    2. Basic health care terminology 7 - nursing aids, medical/surgical instruments, health care devices, patient care - part II.
    3. Medical and nursing diagnosis. ICD, NANDA. Abbreviations in health care and documentation. Microbiology. Nosology - disease nomenclature.
    4. Basic health care terminology 8 - Pharmacology and treatment. Administration of medicine. Medical and surgical nursing.
    5. Basic health care terminology 9 - Surgery and orthopaedics. Bandages and dressings. Nursing records.
    6. Basic health care terminology 10 - The circulatory system. Dictionary entries.
    7. Basic health care terminology 11 - The digestive system. Nutrition and feeding, hydration. Specialized texts. The structure of a journal article.
    8. Základy zdravotnické terminologie 12 - The respiratory system. The integumentary system. The urinary and reproductive system. Discussion of public health.
    9. Základy zdravotnické terminologie 13 - The nervous system. Discussion of health care systems.
    10. Revision. Final assessment. Considering the nursing profession.

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. Non-contact hours are realized via an e-learning environment available at http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written or oral assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
Requirements for credit: a minimum of 90 % attendance in the seminars/practicals and completing the following assignments:
A glossary of terms - a continuous record of vocabulary.
Presentation - a grammar topic as a slide presentation or spoken presentation.
Written test (a minimum of 70 % correct answers).
