Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with nursing care for invasive inputs to the patient, including patient preparation before the introduction of specific invasive input, the introduction of the input itself or assistance to a physicians in introducing a specific input, care for the input, comprehensive care for patients with invasive inputs, the most common complication occurring in context with a particular invasive input, evaluation of invasive inputs, withdrawal of invasive inputs.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students are familiar with the problems of caring for patients with invasive inputs.
Professional Skills: Students can take care of different kinds of invasive inputs, evaluate them and actively prevent complications associated with invasive input
General Qualification: The student knows the indications for the introduction of invasive inputs, knows the process of their introduction and can take care of them. Students are able to use their theoretical knowledge in practice.
Competences: After completing the course, students will be able to prepare the patient for the introduction of invasive input, independently prepare all the equipment, introduce or assist in the introduction of invasive inputs, assess inputs, prevent complications and withdraw or assist in the withdrawal of invasive inputs
Syllabus
  • 1. Asepsis, antisepsis, preparation of sterile table, local anesthetics.
    2. Vascular inputs. Peripheral venous cannula, central venous catheter, arterial cannula.
    3. Inputs into the digestive tract. A nasogastric tube, orogastric tube, PEG, nutritional jejunostomy, FlexiSeal.
    4. Inputs related to evacuation. Indwelling urinary catheter, epicystostomy, nephrostomy.
    5. Inputs to the respiratory system. Endotracheal tube, tracheostomy tube, chest tube.
    6. Inputs into the spinal canal and head. Epidural catheter, spinal catheter, ICP, external ventricular drainage.
    7. Drainages Types of drains and drainage, assessment of drain waste.
    8. Long-term invasive inputs. Intravenous ports, tunnelled central catheter, PICC, midline.

Assessment methods
Meeting the 80% attendance at the seminar, demonstration of practical and theoretical skills in the selected range.
Evaluation indicators: Attendance will be checked by signing an attendance sheet. For practical credit check, the student will lot-draw a particular range of care for invasive inputs. Credit will be awarded based on their theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Evaluation criteria: The student will be awarded credit if 80% attendance is met and basic procedures of care for invasive inputs are demonstrated.
The student will not be awarded credit, if the reaction to the lot-drawn range of car is not satisfactory.
If the student fails to meet 80% attendance for serious reasons and after properly excused, the instructor may assign additional written work to the student as a substitution.
