Course objectives
The course objectives are to deepen the knowledge of grammatical rules, develop communication skills in English (written and spoken), to acquaint students with a wider set of healthcare and medical terminology, with the system of its creation and of its use. The course includes practising all basic language skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translation) with an emphasis on understanding professional texts and the ability to communicate in situations specific to the healthcare professions (interview with the patient, understanding, documentation and technical resources). Having completed the course, students will be well versed in medical terms (including anatomical nomenclature and its Latin roots), key grammatical means of communication and selected facts about the healthcare of English-speaking countries.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students master approx. 1000 technical terms of medical areas and can use them in both receptive mode (reading comprehension, listening) and productive mode (academic writing, monologue and dialogue). They know the available printed and online dictionaries and English resources in their field.
Professional Skills: Students can engage in wider general and professional communication in English in spoken and written language. They can use the available dictionaries and online resources, describe the condition of the patient, understand the basic documentation including abbreviations contained, understand the meaning of an academic text in their field and adequately translate the text.
General Qualification: Students acquire and produce verbally coded information in a variety of professional and extra-professional communication situations.
Competences: Students can communicate effectively in English, understand professional texts at an intermediate level of complexity, formulate ideas effectively in English in spoken and written form in general and in specialized medical topics.

  • 2. Introduction to medical terminology 7 - Nursing tools, medical instruments, medical technology, patient care.
  • 3. Medical and nursing diagnosis. ICD, NANDA. Medical abbreviations. Abbreviations in the documentation. Microbiology. Nosology - nomenclature of diseases.
  • 4. Introduction to medical terminology 8 - Pharmacology and therapy. Administration of drugs. Internal and surgical nursing.
  • 5. Introduction to medical terminology 9 – Surgery and ortopedics. Bandaging techniques. Nursing documentation.
  • 6. Introduction to medical terminology 10 - Circulatory system. Work with a dictionary.
  • 7. Introduction to medical terminology 11 - Digestive system. Nutrition, hydration. Professional reading. The structure of a scientific article.
  • 8. Introduction to medical terminology 12 - Respiratory system. Integumentary system. Excretory and reproductive systems. Discussion on public health.
  • 9. Introduction to medical terminology 13 - Nervous system. Discussion on health care systems.
  • 10. Summary findings. Final evaluation. Reflections on the future vocation.

Assessment methods
Fulfillment of 90% instruction attendance at seminars / training, presentation of a topic before class and completion of a written test as a condition of awarding credit. Ongoing evaluation takes place at training / seminars - student activity, presentation of formal and substantive requirements (factual accuracy, interactivity, list of sources).
Translation:
Translation 1-2 standard pages of English text into Czech. Assessed are adequacy of vocabulary, grammar and functional equivalence. Individual work. of the field.
