Course objectives
The objectives of the course Communication with the elderly I is to increase knowledge and enhance communication skills of students in the field of social communication and communication strategies with the elderly. The lecture series deals with personal and professional prerequisites of helping professional in collaboration and especially communication with the elderly, different forms of communication with the elderly, the communication process, the needs of the elderly in communication, barriers and noise in communication with the senior, overcoming obstacles in impaired communication abilities of the elderly (sensory disability, dementia, etc.) and techniques of active listening and conversing with an elderly person. The theoretical knowledge will be transferred into practice immediately.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students knows and understands the basic terminology and concepts of social communication with the elderly, understands the processes of social interaction and the specifics of communication with the elderly specifics. They understand the connection between mental properties personality and communication of the elderly, they understand the influence of psychopathology on the manner in which the elderly conduct communication.

Professional skills: Students can effectively use the resources of verbal and non-verbal communication, maintain a conversation with an elderly person, discover barriers and hindrances to communication and prevent problem situations. They can use the conversational technique of active listening and communication strategies respecting the specificities of communication with the elderly so as to avoid conflict, reduce the level of aggression and chose the appropriate method of social intervention. Students can apply the information and skills in practice. They are able to integrate the acquired knowledge with the needs of their practice.

General qualification: Students can respect the specifics of communication with the elderly, choose an appropriate communication strategy, actively listen and maintain conversation with the elderly. Having completed the course, students will be qualified to use their knowledge and skills in their work with the elderly and better respond to the needs of clients in the context of communication.

  • 2. Basic prerequisites of the counselling process, the most common errors and mistakes
  • 3. Effects of involutional changes in communication by the elderly
  • 4. The content and relational planes of communication, evaluation and devaluation processes
  • 5. Verbal communication with the elderly and appropriate strategies
  • 6. Non-verbal communication with the elderly and appropriate strategies
  • 7. Communication process, barriers and noise barriers in communicating with an elderly person
  • 8. Specifics of communication with the elderly
  • 9. The needs of the elderly in communication
  • 10. Appropriate communication strategy with senior impaired communication skills
  • 11. Principles of communication with senior and effective communication strategy
  • 12. Active listening and creating an environment of trust
  • 13. Counselling interview, using the techniques of active listening
