Course objectives
The course objective is to understand the principles of volunteer work with the elderly and the motivation for it. At the beginning, students become familiar with the specifics of volunteering work with the elderly and they are provided room for discussion and practical verification of their findings. Throughout the course, emphasis is put on the practice of systematic and regular participation of the student, allowing for them to perceive the contact with the client over time, registering shifts in the relationship with clients and change in their motivation for common activity. The content of volunteer work may be individual contact with the senior (supporting conversation, activation), as well as attendance at and subsequent leadership of group activities with elements of reminiscence therapy, cognitive function training, art therapy, music therapy, relaxation, etc. Students may pursue volunteering practice in social services for the elderly (homes for the elderly, day care, sheltered housing, respite care services, day care service centres, day care centres, week care centres, special homes), homes for people with disabilities, in hospitals, long-term care facilities, senior clubs and at events organized for senior target group. Students can also volunteer to work in organizations associating seniors with e.g. visual, hearing or physical disabilities, spa facilities and the like. The scope of work experience is 36 hours per semester.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students acquire and demonstrate knowledge of basic principles of volunteering work. They will be well versed in the legislative anchorage of volunteer work in the Czech Republic and the issues of volunteering centres and organizations focused on work with seniors where volunteer work is carried out.

Professional Skills: Students will learn to apply in practice the knowledge of andragogy, psychology and other disciplines, and in the form of individual or group contacts with seniors, they will obtain specific experience in conducting a support conversation and in cognitive functions training methods, reminiscence activity, art therapy and activity therapy. They realizes the specifics of work with seniors and learn to perceive the merits and risks of such work. They will be able to communicate with their superiors in the organization and other volunteers.

General qualification: Students are able to perceive the social importance and necessity of volunteer work, especially in the area of volunteer work with the elderly. Having completed the course, students will be qualified not only to use their knowledge and skills for specific volunteering work with the elderly, but also to better respond to the needs of clients and of the organization’s working team members. Methods of the course instruction will support students’ orientation on volunteer work with the elderly.
