Course objectives
The objective is to deepen the knowledge of modern European philosophy, in particular the philosophy of history, as well as political and social philosophy based on understanding and knowledge of the main philosophical theories and directions in the 16th - 20th centuries. In this context, increased attention will be devoted to the significant thinkers and ideas.
Syllabus
  • Topics:
    Philosophy of history and political philosophy in a wider perspective and context of history of Western philosophy. Philosophy of history and political philosophy as philosophical disciplines. Theoretical problems of the philosophy of history and political philosophy. The importance of the question of the meaning of history in the European political thinking.
    Philosophy of history and political philosophy in the 16th - 18th centuries. Basic universalist approaches to history from B. Vico to I. Kant. Refusal of the political-philosophical thinking of the Renaissance and the trend toward autonomous development of the issues related to political philosophy in modern age (J. A. Comenius and T. Hobbes). The main problems of the modern political philosophy (theory of social contract, natural rights, sovereignty, progress) and the origins of liberalism and utilitarianism.
    Hegel's history of philosophy and the political philosophy of German idealism. Marxist concept of history and its criticism by M. Weber. J. Ch. Burckhardt and his concept of history.
    Hermeneutic view of history by W. Dilthey and development of his philosophy in the 20th century (M. Heidegger, H. G. Gadamer). Positivist concept of history (A. Comte, J. S. Mill). Social utopia and philosophy of B. Bolzano and his influence on the Czech elite in the 19th century, Masaryk's philosophy of Czech history.
    Liberalism and the response to totalitarian experience. Main figures of liberal theory and criticism of modern society (M. Friedman, F. A. Hayek, etc.). The criticism of historicism, totalitarianism and ideology (K. R. Popper, R. Aron, etc.). Phenomenology and history (J. Patočka).
    Communitarianism and its criticism of liberalism (A. MacIntyre, Ch. Taylor, etc.). Post-modern political philosophy and philosophy of history (J. Derrida, M. Foucault). Implications of the assumptions of analytical philosophy for the philosophy of history and political philosophy.
    Selected concepts of post-industrial society (D. Bell, A. Touraine). Philosophy of the "End of History", post-historicism and their criticism (F. Fukuyama, S. Huntington).
