- Course objectives
- The course introduces students to the basics of scientific work, especially in the field of healthcare and social sciences with a special emphasis on midwifery. The aim is that having completed the course, the students have acquired insight and are able to explain and apply the difference between scientific and unscientific approaches, know the types of research, ethical issues of research and sources of human knowledge, know and apply the basic methods of scientific work - qualitative and quantitative research, know how to read and navigate scientific literature appropriately and evaluate scientific texts, know the research process and its phases, know the essence of health research focused on midwifery - EBMid / EBP, online tools for surveys, management - preparation - data import, data visualization, and descriptive statistics. Subsequently, students can perform simple statistical analysis.

- Technical knowledge and skills:
Having completed the course, students will know how to: - design simple research in midwifery and develop it into the form of research questions, including research project plan,
- explain the EBP (EBN) principles in obstetrics and midwifery,
- explain the principles of quantitative and qualitative research,
- use basic statistics and selected qualitative research methods for data processing,
- describe the principles and the different stages of research design,
- respect the ethical and legal framework of clinical research and the ethics of scientific work,
- process a research project in midwifery and obstetrics and defend it.
General Qualification: Students can design and implement basic empirical measurements, processes an empirically oriented project and implement the EBP method.
Competences: They are able to: monitor research and development in the field, work using the EBP method and use the results to develop care in terms of quality and safety. Manage their compete participation in research projects. - Syllabus
- Lectures
- 1. Introduction to medical research. Definition of science. Scientific knowledge. Characteristic features of modern science. Definition of the terms science, research and of their kinds. Research in healthcare. Ethics of scientific research in healthcare.
- 2. Research phases: preparatory phase, research project, research subject (hypothesis and its types, methods and techniques, processing, organizational provision of research). Formulation of the research problem.
- 3. Various phases of the research process.
- 4. Work with information resources. Information systems for science and research. Search - formulation and development of the research problem using the PICOT method. Evidence-based practice - EBP (EBN).
- 5. Quantitative and qualitative research, technology research, formulation of research questions and hypotheses.

- 1. Research in midwifery.
- 2. Ways of assessing quantitative data - quantitative table, mean values, graphs. Hypothesis testing.
- 3. Qualitative research, methodology - basic principles and procedures.
- 4 Evidence-based practice - EBP (EBN).
- 5. Formulation of individual research problem, searching relevant studies in Czech and foreign sources.

- Fulfilment of 80% instruction attendance (students who cannot attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements) and creation of a project presentation.
