- Course objectives
- Dying and death is still a taboo subject nowadays.The course objective is to get not only the ability to think and speak about the subject, but to be able to provide information from different disciplines that are related to dying, accompanying the dying and mourning.
- Learning outcomes
- Professional knowledge: Students can characterize hospice and palliative care, describe their evolution and differences, enumerate myths about dying, explain the problems accompanying the dying and the mourning, clarify the process and make sense of mourning.
Professional skills: Students can interpret the information and carry out practical training in hospices. Under the guidance of practitioners, students will be able to deal with the situations related to the issue in question.
General qualification: Students will be able to apply acquired knowledge and skills in an environment with a dying individual, they will be able to find and convey the information to other people (laity), independently acquire additional knowledge and skills, not only by further studying theoretical knowledge, but also on the basis of their practical findings. - Syllabus
- 1. Death and dying as a problem in modern society. Culture and death.
- 2. History and development of hospice care. Ethical aspects of hospice care
- 3. History and development of palliative care Ethical aspects of palliative care
- 4. Myths about dying and palliative care
- 5. Children and death
- 6. Domestic and institutional care of the dying
- 7. Palliative care of seniors. Terminally ill people.
- 8. Accompanying the dying. Communication with experts
- 9. Needs of the dying, needs of their loved ones, family relationships. Communication in the family
- 10. The issues of euthanasia. Ethical dilemmas
- 11. Final arrangements, mourning rites.
- 12. Mourning – coping with the loss of a loved one, accompanying survivors.
