Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic information about systemic definition of nursing as integral part of health care system in which qualified nurses carry out their profession. The course explains recent scientific (holistic) view of health of individuals and its effect on economic transformation and change of organization structures of health care systems. It characterizes current social needs in health care in European context and realization of extensive changes connected to implementation of new legal regulations and standards. Extended roles of nurses are reflected in their professional education and functional profile in practice. Gordon's functional health patterns, a structure of health assessment defines the field of nursing as well. After finishing the course, the student will be well informed in the systemic definition of nursing. They will understand functions and competence of nurses. They will be able to apply the structure of nursing assessment to assess health of individuals, families and communities.
Syllabus
  • 1. Social changes and nursing care (main trends affecting education in nursing).
    2. Health of population and nursing care (the concept of health, WHO strategy for population health care, roles of nurses and midwives in society.)
    3. Professional training of nurses and midwives in Europe (standards of education and training of nurses, WHO strategy principles of education for nurses and midwives, policy of education content).
    4. Nursing competence in practice - growth of professionalism in nursing care (the term of competence, professional nursing, role and competence of nurses in multi-disciplinarian team, standards of nurses' professional performance, knowledge and skills, regulation system of nursing practice).
    5. Nursing assessment of health (types of information and its acquisition, development of standard model for nursing assessment).
    6. Functional health patterns - M.Gordon's model, structure for health assessment (its significance for nursing practice; health assessment of adult client/patient, of infant/child/adolescent; health assessment of family, community).
    7. Dysfunctional types of health and nursing assessment (distinguishing functional and dysfunctional type of health; NANDA nursing diagnosis in 11 patterns of dysfunctional health; health assessment for acute life-threatening conditions.

Controlled self-study with continuous assessment of acquired knowledge.
Evaluation of risk for own health according to Gordon's functional health patterns.
Two final electronic tests, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers are required on each test.
