Course objectives
The objective of the course is to familiarize the student with principles of palliative and hospice care and certain issues related to dying and death. The course describes patient classification, indications for palliative/hospice care, issues related to death and dying and common challenges in caring for this specific patient population. On completion of the course the student will be able to orientate themselves theoretically and practically in the care of persons who suffer from incurable diseases or are dying.
Syllabus
  • 1. Palliative care, its forms and characteristic features. Target groups of palliative care.
    2. Hospice care, its forms and characteristic features. Target groups of hospice care.
    3. Personal management in palliative and hospice care. Prevention of burn-out.
    4. Dying and death. Ethical aspects of nursing care of the dying.
    5. Needs of dying patients and their relatives, spiritual care.
    6. Assessment of signs and symptoms in palliative care.
    7. Pain management.

Credit requirements: 80% attendance in seminars. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
