Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic terms used to characterize particular mental processes, mental conditions and psychological characteristics of people. The course describes key terms of general psychology, basic schools of psychology, cognitive processes such as perception, memory, thinking; emotional and volitional processes as well as intelligence, creativity and abilities. After finishing the course, the student will have good knowledge of basic terms of psychology and of characteristics of particular psychological processes, mental conditions and characteristics which will enable them to focus on issues of psychic life of man and to establish a theoretical background for further study of applied disciplines of psychology and pedagogy. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student demonstrates knowledge of essence of basic psychological schools (behaviourism, psychoanalysis, humanist psychology), knowledge of essence of cognitive processes (perception, thinking, memory), of emotional and volitional processes. Professional skills: The student is well informed about normal progress of psychological processes and possible changes of psychological condition and characteristics of people. General ability: Student is able to use knowledge of general psychology in their own vocational activity and in personal life. Competence: The course of general psychology is focused especially on acquiring soft skills such as learning and orientation in psychological information, on all-life study in the field of psychology in regard to the requirements of medical profession, on development of effective communication strategies and on coping with stress.
Syllabus
  • 1. Psychology - subject and aims, psychological disciplines. Position of psychology in the system of sciences. Ethical problems of present psychology. Methods of psychological research.
    2. Basic terms of general psychology (psychics, psychological contents, processes and conditions, behaviour and experience). Determination of human psyche.
    3. Consciousness - function of consciousness, states of altered consciousness. Unconsciousness, sub-consciousness and pre-consciousness.
    4. Sensory processes - general characteristics of sense organs, sensory threshold, Weber-Fechner law.
    5. Perception - basic characteristics of the process, constants of perception, organization of the field of perception, perceptual illusion.
    6. Memory - definition of the process, types of memory, organization of data in long-term memory, process of forgetting.
    7. Imagination - definition of terms, types of visions, means of recalling, phantasies (types, means of creating).
    8. Thinking - basic forms of thinking, concept (definite and indefinite), types of thinking, thinking operations, reasoning, factors which influence decision-making.
    9. Abilities and creativity. Intellect and intelligence.
    10. Emotions - basic components of emotions, types of emotions, function of emotions. Volitional processes.

Teacher's information
Independent work by students consists of:
1. Reading compulsory reading and dealing with heuristic tasks.
2. Writing an essay on given topics on the basis of comparative analysis of articles from psychological periodicals.
Assessment: submit written report on tasks which are designed as heuristic search of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills (Iljuk, B. Základy psychologie v heuristických otázkách a úlohách).
