Course objectives
The course is based on theoretical lessons. It expands on medical knowledge relevant for professional clinical nursing care in the area of oral health. The course familiarizes students with preventive care in pediatric and adult stomatology and with common clinical conditions and diseases of the oral cavity. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: On completion of the course the student is able to demonstrate knowledge of the pathogenesis, etiology and prevention of stomatologic disease, and knowledge of nurse roles in prevention and education. Professional skills: The student is able to assist in oral cavity care and educate clients of all ages in an adequate manner about factors influencing oral health. General ability: The student is able to contribute to prevention of dental caries and other oral diseases in the population. They demonstrate skills in oral hygiene. Competence: The student is able to participate in stomatology care within the scope of their competence and knowledge. The student shows potential for further education in the area.
Syllabus
  • 1. Preventive stomatology.
    2. Caries (definition, prevalence, causes/etiology, clinical manifestation, treatment and care). Periodontal disease (definition, prevalence, causes/etiology, clinical manifestation, treatment and care). Orthodontics; restorative stomatology; parodontology.
    3. Diseases of the oral cavity (necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, candidiasis, aphtha, herpes simplex, salivary gland disorders).
    4. Malignant diseases of the oral cavity (etiology, clinical manifestation, treatment and care).
    5. Oral, dental and maxillofacial surgery (congenital abnormalities, glossectomy, mandibulectomy, trauma, esthetic surgery).
    6. Dental practice and dental clinics. Visit to a dental/oral surgery clinic.
    7. Dental hygiene in HIV positive and AIDS patients.
