Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with findings and skills in the field of nursing care of acute and chronic wounds. Having finished the course, the students orientate themselves in the issues of wound care and they will be able to provide nursing care of specific clinical statuses. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students can characterize symptoms and treatment of specific diseases related to nursing care of wounds. The students orientate themselves in treatment methods of wound care and in their variations and procedures. Professional skills: The students are able to plan and provide care by the method of nursing process for patients with acute or chronic wounds. General ability: The students are able to establish a nursing anamnesis for patients with wounds (both acute and chronic) independently, to diagnose nursing problems, plan care and assess the expected results in changes to patients' medical conditions. Competence: The students shall further verify, enhance and deepen the gained ability of working by means of the nursing process method for patients with wounds in subsequent studies and clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. General information on wounds, types of wounds, mechanisms of wound initiation. Healing process. Nutrition requirements. Nursing estimations and nursing diagnoses of wound care. Local therapeutic measures, general therapeutic measures.
    2. Dry wound treatment. Wet wound treatment. Requirements for dressing (bandaging) material based on types of wounds.
    3. Nursing care of clients with surgical wounds. Nursing care of clients with acute traumatic defect.
    4. Infections in wounds. Types of infections, treatment of infected wounds.
    5. Pressure ulcer (decubitus), mechanism of pressure ulcer development, prevention, pre-emptive detection. Pressure ulcer stages and their gravity for a human organism.
    6. Nursing care of clients with pressure ulcers based on a disease stage.
    7. Diabetic leg syndrome, predispositions of disease development, preventive measures, pre-emptive detection.
    8. Nursing care of clients with the diabetic leg syndrome based on a disease stage. The venous ulceration, the mechanism of development, preventive measures, predisposition for disease development, pre-emptive detection of the defect.
    9. Nursing care of clients suffering from the venous ulceration based on the stage of the disease.

A credit test and demonstration of skills while caring wounds. A seminar essay on the assigned topic in the extent of 3 pages (A4-format, a case report can be included).
