Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with findings and skills in the field of nursing care of acute and chronic wounds. Having finished the course, the students orientate themselves in the issues of wound care and they will be able to provide nursing care of specific clinical statuses.
Syllabus
  • 1. General information on wounds, types of wounds, mechanisms of wound initiation. Healing process. Nutrition requirements. Nursing estimations and nursing diagnoses of wound care. Local therapeutic measures, general therapeutic measures.
    2. Dry wound treatment. Wet wound treatment. Requirements for dressing (bandaging) material based on types of wounds.
    3. Nursing care of clients with surgical wounds. Nursing care of clients with acute traumatic defect.
    4. Infections in wounds. Types of infections, treatment of infected wounds.
    5. Pressure ulcer (decubitus), mechanism of pressure ulcer development, prevention, pre-emptive detection. Pressure ulcer stages and their gravity for a human organism.
    6. Nursing care of clients with pressure ulcers based on a disease stage.
    7. Diabetic leg syndrome, predispositions of disease development, preventive measures, pre-emptive detection.
    8. Nursing care of clients with the diabetic leg syndrome based on a disease stage. The venous ulceration, the mechanism of development, preventive measures, predisposition for disease development, pre-emptive detection of the defect.
    9. Nursing care of clients suffering from the venous ulceration based on the stage of the disease.
