Course objectives

The course extends the knowledge of the main stages and problems of development of the countries in the Central European area from the turn of 18th and 19th centuries to the present. Emphasis is laid on the questions of in-depth interpretation of history of individual states as well as the general clarification of complex relations determining the character of co-existence of communities living in the wider Central European area and the comparison of respective related phenomena. Students will gain an overview of main trends and features of shaping the social, political and cultural relationships in this area within a given timescale, including the wider geo-political context and its changes.

Syllabus

• Topics:
  - The phenomenon of "Central Europe" in theoretical reflection and in the context of social science research.
  - Central Europe on the way from the "old society" to liberalism, nationalism, and modernisation (late 18th century - 1880s).
  - The end of the "long" 19th century, World War I and its consequences in the Central European area.
  - Central Europe in crisis and war conflict (1930s and World War II).
  - Central European region and the competition of power-political blocks; conflict between democracy and totalitarianism (1950s and 1960s).
  - Central European countries between confrontation and relief; ambition and uncertainties of communist regimes (1970s and 1980s)
  - The fall of communism and transformation processes: results, prospects and comparisons.
