Course objectives

The course focuses on national minorities in the Central European area, causes, course and possibilities of solutions of migration and inter-ethnic conflicts with an emphasis on the border regions, in the context of knowledge of ethnic theory and theory of ethnic conflicts. Students will be able, based on their knowledge of ethnology, history, social studies, psychology, cultural comparison, political studies and other fields, to carry out independent analysis of the relationships among states, nations, national and ethnic minorities in Central Europe, including evaluation of national myths, stereotypes and prejudices and recognition of current sources of inter-ethnic tension in this area, identifying the limits and possibilities of further development.

Syllabus

• Topics:
  - Orientation in the terms of ethnic theory, theory of ethnic conflicts and in the new researches of the issue.
  - Shaping of modern nations in Central Europe, specific characteristics of small nations and ethnic groups. Migration processes in the Central-European area before World War I.
  - Division of Europe after World War I and II and its consequences for states and nations in Central Europe.
  - Specific aspects of inter-ethnic conflicts in post-war Central Europe and their causes, sources of ethnic tension after the fall of communism, the limits and possibilities for conflict resolution.
  - Present situation and problems of nations and ethnic groups in Central Europe, problems of conservation and revitalization of the ethnic identity of minorities, specific aspects of inter-ethnic problems in border areas.
  - Contemporary migration and new ethnic groups in Central Europe, national nature, stereotypes and overcoming prejudices.
  - Comparing the state of protection of minorities in the Central European countries and the factors of stability in the Central European area (the European Union, Euroregions, etc.).
