Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the main methodological aspects of social research and clarify the system of collecting sociological data and their analysis. The course has a practical orientation, students will exercise in some concrete techniques at seminars. Graduates should be able to design and realize simple research (applicable for exampĺe for their thesis) after passing the course and also to understand empirically based scientific articles and more critically read research reports and information from research presented in mass-media.

  • 1. Character of social sciences and sociological research; a model of empirical research
    2. Research starts at a library - How to read a scientific text in social sciences
    3. Research is finished by a text - How to write a scientific text in social sciences (research project, logic of a research report)
    4. Quantitative and qualitative research paradigms (their differences and complementarity)
    5. Main methods of quantitative research; validity and reliability
    6. Survey sampling and the problem of representativity
    7. Questionnaire and observing as data collection techniques; the problem of operationalization
    8. Methods on the boarder-line between quantitative and qualitative research (semantical differential, sociometry)
    9. Content and discourse analysis- basic principles and techniques)
    10. Qualitative research methods
    11. Data analysis in qualitative research
    12. Problems and mistakes in interpretation of qualitative data
