Course objectives
The course provides the students with fundamentals of clinical haematology and clinical transfusion medicine to which other courses of the field of nursing are tied. The course provides information on basic as well as special examination methods in haematology, it informs the students about the method of blood taking for haematological examinations, with clinical significance of individual examinations and about the method of result interpretation. It provides a summary of pathophysiological units most frequently occurring in clinical practice. It provides the students with the basic principles of transfusion medicine, with the organization of blood component sampling, with laboratory methods used in transfusion medicine, with production of transfusion preparations and indications for their application and with post-transfusion complications. It points out the importance of donation of blood and of haematogenous cells and it provides information on its conditions. It provides information of possibilities of hemapheretic techniques of blood collection.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to haematology, basic physical and chemical characteristics of blood.
    2. Haematopoiesis - its structure, function and controlling.
    3. Fundamentals of laboratory diagnosis in haematology. Basic parameters of blood count and their significance. Haemoglobin, its structure and functions.
    4. Anaemia - description, types, therapies. Leuopenia and leukocytosis - description of various conditions and diseases and their therapies. Thrombocytopenia and thromobocytosis - description of various conditions and diseases and their therapies.
    5. Oncological haematology - leukaemia, lymphomas and other lymphoproliferations and myeloproliferations. Donation of bone marrow and haematogenous cells. Transplantation of bone marrow and haematogenous cells.
    6. Physiology and pathopysiology of blood clotting. Congenital and acquired defects of blood clotting. Thrombophilic conditions, thromboembolic disease. Anticoagulation therapy.
    7. Transfusion service organization in the Czech Republic. Donation of blood and blood components. Good practice in transfusion. Good practice in production of transfusion preparations. Significance of examination of infection markers in transfusion service.
    8. Immunohaematology. AB0 and Rh system - their clinical significance. Pre-transfusion examination. Haemolytic diseases of newborns.
    9. Transfusion preparations - types and indications. Blood derivates - types and indications. Haemovigilance and post-transfusion reactions. Haemaphereses.
    10. Blood collections for haematological examinations, blood count analyzers, pre-analytic stage and its importance.
    11. Examination of erythrocyte sedimentation, hematocrit, haemocoagulation analyzers, interpretation of results.
    12. Determination of AB0-system blood group and Rh. Microscopic observations of samples.

Credit requirements: 80% active attendance at practical sessions (the teacher can specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons)
