The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with deep view into the culture that in the context of the crisis of multiculturalism seems to be highly relevant. During the lectures, the students apprise with a wide range of theories and concepts of culture and they will be able to create a "polygonal" idea of what culture can be. In other words, they get an overview of the culture, which will begin in culture understood as the art to culture, that can be of various meanings. Although the subject is mainly set theoretically it is expected to create theoretical and practical base for such items which need to understand the culture but they can not pay attention to it in deep level. Here we have in mind mainly subjects that deal with issues of minorities, ethnic groups, multicultural world of possibilities ap.

  • 1st The basic definition of culture - culture as an indefinable concept
    2nd Sociological definition of culture
    3rd Philosophical definition of culture
    4th Language and culture - how language creates an image of what we see ? The theory of linguistic picture of the world and the Foucault episptems.
    5th Cultural contexts and their differences
    6th The European cultural context and its "pillars". What we could find if we ask for a being "European"?
    7th Eastern cultural context and its variations - is rather typical of the East "fatum mohametanum"?
    8th Culture and religion as an important factor forming the meanings of space
    9th Christianity and Islam - Why Christianity contributed to the rise of modern society and how it relates the speculative theology with liberalism?
    10th Cultural rootlessness - marginalization
    11th The problems of minorities and their cultures - What happens when culture is not taken seriously?
    12th Culture and knowledge - knowledge of society and culture matter? Does it mean to know a lot also automatically to be educated?
