Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide student with information on basic procedures of communication with disabled, socially disadvantaged and handicapped human beings and to provide knowledge of priorities in communication properly led by health-service specialists. In addition to communication with individuals, the course also describes the importance of empathy in communication and the importance of mirroring in communication. The highest attention is paid to practising of communication with human beings suffering from various handicaps. Having finished the course, the students are able to orient themselves in the issues of communication with human beings suffering from various handicaps, properly led communication with elderly people, children and people suffering from pain. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students are able to describe and explain specific aspects of communication with clients/patients of all ages who suffer from various kinds of handicaps. They are able to propose the appropriate way of communication. Professional skills: The students are able to use the selected method of communication with people of all ages suffering from various kinds of handicaps properly. General ability: The students can decide themselves independently and choose the right type of communication with people with the above-mentioned handicaps conscientiously. Competence: Having finished this course, the students can provide individuals, families and their relatives with required information appropriately with regard to their competences and they are mindful of providing clear information and assessing the acquired results in clients'/patients' awareness. Students shall deepen and enhance the acquired ability to communicate with an individual or a group of clients/patients in subsequent studies and clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Communication - general definitions and terminology.
    2. Communication with hearing-impaired clients; leading, addressing, the sign language.
    3. Communication with visually-impaired clients; leading, movement in space, addressing in the public.
    4. Communication with clients suffering from pain. Acute pain and chronic pain and their effects on communication.
    5. Communication in the stage of loss, telling the truth.
    6. Communication and forming of healthy relationships; communication of cordiality, respect and sincerity.
    7. Mirroring in communication, mirroring techniques. Feedback providing in communication, positive feedback, negative feedback.
    8. Empathy in medical communication. Empathetic behaviour.
    9. Communication with elderly people. Effects of limited sensory perception on communication at old age.
    10. Communication with children. Specifics of communication depending on the age of children. Communication with an adolescent.
    11. Communication with adults, communication during education of an adult client. Differences in communication with men and women.
