- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide elementary information about the branch on the background of current state of Czech penal system and its implementation in European context. The students will be introduced with respective legal arrangement, organisational structure of Prison Service of the Czech republic, current issues of prison staff and other questions of penitentiary theory and practice. The course will comprise also practical visit of prison institution. Study Outcomes: Professional Knowledge: Students acquire and demonstrate knowledge of basic penological findings. They know the legislation regulating imprisonment, custody and security detention. They are well informed on basic approaches to solving social integration of people after imprisonment. Professional Skills: Students are well versed in the practices of working with clients of detention facilities and in procedures used in post-penitential social work. They are reliably familiar with the relevant field literature, can locate, interpret and apply the gained information in practice. Passing this course, they become able to integrate the acquired knowledge to the fulfilment of the needs of the field practice. General Qualification: Students can comprehend the context of task execution in post-penitential practice in the Czech conditions. Completion of the course Selected Chapters on Penology makes it easier for students to adapt to social work in prisons which requires expertise in addition to the general and specific training in departmental educational institute. Methods of the course will encourage the development of critical thinking, creativity and the students' ability to make decisions independently and responsibly.

2. Prison service of the Czech republic
3. European prison rules
4. Legal arrangement of execution of custody
5. Legal arrangement of execution of sentence
6. Realization of laws of imprisoned in execution of imprisonment
7. Excursion to prison
8. Effectiveness of imprisonment sentence
10. Organisational structure of the Czech prisons and prison staff.
11. Alternative punishments and cooperation of the Prison Service and the Probation and Mediation Service.
12 The issue of reintegration of convicted persons into civilian life.
13. Summary
Seminar
The lectures are followed by experiential exercises in the seminar where the basic skills needed for penitential practice are developed. It is required that students manifest the ability to understand the presentation of media-published criminal cases, or current topics of the Czech prison service, always referring to a comparison with the theory of punishment and other areas of the penitential theory according to scientific literature. Active participation in seminars is required which is assessed based on relevant suggestions regarding the presentations of other students.
