Course objectives
The aim of the course Special Education in Practice is to acquaint foreign students with the primary pillars of Czech special pedagogy in the context of inclusive societal trends and with the competencies of a special pedagogue in the Czech Republic. Students will obtain information about special pedagogy as a scientific discipline, including currently used terminology based on current domestic and foreign legislative documents. They will become acquainted with the educational system of pupils with special educational needs in the Czech Republic in practice during excursions and visits to specific schools and facilities. As part of this course, students will also visit special schools and facilities for adults with disabilities. The hour quota for these excursions is 12 hours per semester.
Learning outcomes
Having completed the course Special pedagogy / practice, students should be able to:
-Define the content and concept of special pedagogy as a scientific discipline in the Czech Republic and abroad.
-Define basic terms related to people with disabilities and pupils with special educational needs, inclusion and education.
-Compare the education system in the Czech Republic and abroad.
-Work with documents of a legislative nature.
-Be able to explain the essence of counselling and the counselling system in the context of inclusion.
-Discuss selected pedagogical issues.
-Evaluate support and educational opportunities for pupils with special educational needs in schools.
-According to their possibilities and excursions completed, discuss the diversity and possibilities of special pedagogical facilities and schools in our country and abroad.
Syllabus
  • 1. Theoretical part:
  • -Basics of special pedagogy as a scientific discipline, its origin, definition, related disciplines, the current need for this scientific discipline in practice.
  • -Terminology of special pedagogy and definition of disability in the Czech Republic and abroad on the basis of valid legislative documents.
  • -Current educational system for special educational needs pupils in the Czech Republic.
  • -Inclusion as a modern direction of education. Definition, characteristics, comparison. Conditions and support for the education of pupils with special educational needs within mainstream schools.
  • -Support measures for pupils with special educational needs at home and abroad. Pupils suitable for inclusive education.
  • -The counselling system and cooperation with counselling centres in education of pupils with special educational needs.
  • -Education of pupils with severe combined disabilities and connection to the use of different educational tools, therapies and concepts.
  • 2. Practical part
  • -Visit to 3-5 schools and special pedagogical facilities in Opava and its surroundings.
  • 3.Evaluation part
  • -Joint discussion, evaluation of excursions and individual tasks, completion of the course.
Assessment methods
Conditions for successful completion of the course are:
-Continuous fulfilment of tasks assigned by the instructor
-An essay on an assigned comparative topic
-Final report from the visited facilities as part of excursions.
Students are evaluated for submitting a portfolio that contains both an essay and a final report from excursions and written assignments, in the range of the following classification:
A–91-100. B–81-90. C–71-80. D–61-70. E–51-60. F–0-50.
