Course objectives
The course objective is to acquaint students with basic terminology of medical disciplines and basic terminology of dentistry, dental hygiene and related fields. The aim of the introductory seminars/exercises is also to verify and deepen knowledge of English grammar and conversation in connection with previous study of the foreign language. English Language 1 is followed by English Language 2.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students have both passive and active command of the basic set of professional English terms in the discipline. They have knowledge of grammar and communication rules at least at the intermediate level.
Professional Skills: Students can appropriately use professional Latin terminology both in speech and writing. Students can apply translatological skills to professional texts of low to medium difficulty.
General Qualification: Students are well versed in the professional terminology and use acquired knowledge in communication and while studying professional texts.
Competences: Students can communicate in English about basic professional topics (communication with the patient, foreign experts) and can understand English professional text of low to medium difficulty.
Syllabus
  • 1. Initial diagnostics of language skills and revision of grammar and communication rules of the English language 1. Introduction to professional English. Introduction to terminology, properties of terminology. Domestic and Latin prefixes and sufixes in English terminology. Medical English.
  • 2. Repetition and deepening of knowledge of the grammar and communication rules of English language 2. Terminology 1 - Health and Disease 1 (infectious diseases).
  • 3. Repetition and deepening of knowledge of the grammar and communication rules of English language 3. Terminology 2 – Health and Disease 2 (non-infectious diseases and injuries).
  • 4. Repetition and deepening of knowledge of the grammar and communication rules of English language 3. Terminology 3 – Health and disease 3 (diseases of the oral cavity and dentition).
  • 5. Terminology 4 - Medical fields. Healthcare staff. Internal and surgical fields of medicine, non-medical areas of healthcare. Dentistry and its likenesses.
  • 6. Terminology 5 - Human body. External anatomy. Body parts – head, torso, limbs.
  • 7. Terminology 6 - Human body. Internal anatomy. Organs and organ systems in the overview. Their nomenclature and functions.
  • 8. Terminology 7 - Digestive system. Its organs and functions. Nutrition and diet.
  • 9. Terminology 8 - Skin system. Musculoskelear system Its organs and functions. Basic nomenclature of skeletal and muscular systems.
  • 10. Terminology 9 - Respiratory system. Digestive system Its organs and functions. Oral cavity and dentition.
  • 11. Terminology 10 - At the dentist’s. Equipment of the dentist's office and dental hygienist. The work of a dental hygienist.
  • 12. Terminology 11 - Dental care. Preventive care. Dental care aids. Dental tools. Communication with patients in English. Working with English scientific texts. Work with a specialized dictionary.

Assessment methods
Fulfill 90% instruction attendance, presentation of language topic before class and completion of a written test as a condition of awarding credit.
Written test: Vocabulary test, applied grammar and translation - open and closed questions / tasks, timeout 45 min, 75% success rate. Students will complete the course in writing in a classroom setting. Ongoing evaluation takes place at training / seminars - student activity, presentation of formal and substantive requirements (factual accuracy, interactivity, list of sources).
Passing a credit test.
